A pilot to Simon D'Ralier, Jak is an ex-Navy officer from humble roots, a fighter, and a drinker. He flies his
guncutter and anything else he can get his hands on with great skill. He will often attempt the risky
Xanatov Gambit. He doesn't always know when to keep his mouth shut.
Appearance
A void-born, Jak is seven feet tall thanks to the lower gravity that is a frequent hazard onboard voidships. His naturally white skin is given a grey tint by the subdermal augmentation applied to it to shield against the raw void.
Although he is capable of growing a beard - some voidborn are not - he prefers to stay clean-shaven. He is athletic, but sometimes appears a little gaunt.
History
Jak was born in the void, on a supply vessel that had spent its life ferrying ration-wafers from place to place, where he spent most of his time avoiding the bilge-rats and scavenging amongst the forgotten crates. Once, when his ship was press-ganged into service supplying a wing of the mighty Battlefleet Calixis, a young Jak hid amongst the supply-crates as they were loaded aboard the
Prominent Victory, a Mars-class battlecruiser in the fleet. Quickly discovered by the ratings and put to work, his quick hands brought him to the attention of the section overseer, who put him through basic lifter training, at which Jak excelled. Proving himself able at piloting such vessels, he was entrusted with more important ships, eventually piloting the Captain's personal Aquila Lander. After successfully returning the lander to the bay while the
Prominent Victory was under attack by Eldar, the captain was so impressed with Jak's ability that he allowed him a trial at piloting the
Victory itself - which even Jak was surprised to find he was extremely good at.
Once, drunk with the power at being Captain Jove's favourite, Jak stole an Aquila Lander to take some unapproved shore leave. Reprisal was swift: flogged, brutally fitted with a mind-impulse unit and chained to one of the many co-pilot stations on the bridge for five years. During this time he continued to distinguish himself, and after his punishment detail was complete he passed into the ranks of the Imperial Navy as a commissioned officer on the bridge of the Prominent Victory.
One year, the
Prominent Victory was instrumental in defeating an Eldar incursion into Calixian space - but not before the xenos had burned a number of space orbitals and destroyed many ships, including, Jak discovered in a mission report, the supply vessel his family worked aboard. In a climactic battle, a xenos cruiser scored a lance hit on the
Prominent Victory's bridge, and Captain Jove was killed in the resultant fire. Although Jak survived, he never forgot the actions that the xenos took in killing his mentor and family.
Completing his tour in the Navy with honours, Jak decided that the constraints the military put on him no longer suited him. He cashed out his pension, leveraged the contacts he'd made in the Navy, Administratum and elsewhere, and set himself up as an elite pilot to the extremely wealthy who wanted a ship with a little more punch and intimidation factor than the usual Aquila Lander - a guncutter, his beloved Lightning Fury.
Whenever he flew a mission, he secretly hoped for the chance to meet one of the hated xenos that had invaded the Calixis Sector all those years ago; secretly yearned for the chance to see them and blow them apart with rockets and las. Without a military commission though, his lust for vengeance smouldered rather than burned, and he became self-destructive, turning to parties and high company and strong drink.
He soon became acquainted with Simon D'Ralier, and the two got on well, each more than willing to match the other in debauchery, each unhesitatingly backing the other up.
Since joining Simon as pilot of the
Tide of Iron, Jak has learned a lot by seeing him in action in the role of Lord-Captain Rogue Trader D'Ralier. As command crew, Jak has seen a lot of his own flaws and is working to become more worthy - and more than just a pilot, too: an officer.
Jak's most hated rival is Nejo Skylax.

Possessions
- Lightning Fury, his guncutter.
- D'Ralier family pistol. This plasma pistol was owned by Simon and Simon's grandfather before him, and is now gifted to Jak. Jak takes good care of it.
- Mordian-pattern power sword, the one given to him by the Navy when he became a commissioned officer. Now that he's an officer aboard ship again, he will usually wear it braced with Saint Varnae's Hand as a mark of office, rather than leaving it in the display bracket or in the Lightning Fury. He's had the tech-priests hone its edge to monomolecular sharpness, ignoring their complaints that the power field renders the modification pointless.
- Saint Varnae's Hand boarding pistol, a weapon he's owned for his whole Navy career and had parts replaced, upgraded, and fitted to his specifications until it's perfect for him. It is a technological marvel that he keeps with him always.
- Guard flak armour, consisting of ceramite-reinforced breastplate, vest, armoured flak trousers, combat boots, and Naval greatcoat.
- Blessed ship token, a badge of service from the Prominent Victory.
- Imperial Navy uniform, well-kept in a locker and used when schmoozing is absolutely necessary.
- Micro-bead, two void suits, re-breather, pict recorder, vox-caster, two backpacks, chrono, two drop harnesses and two grapnels, four sets of filtration plugs, two survival suits, medikit, 140 man-days of ration packs, recaf, four glow-globes: all pieces of equipment he's kept from his Navy days or picked up during his current employment, most of which is usually in a storage crate in the Lightning Fury.
- Shipboard Emergency Kit in an easy-to-reach location on the Lightning Fury.
- Two bottles of amasec, one in the pocket of his greatcoat, one stashed by the pilot's chair.
- Two Overcharged Laspistols with red-dot sights, Talon Mark III Short Autopistol (with option of extended 30-round clip), Scipio-pattern Naval Pistol, Frag Grenades, Smoke Grenades, four Monoknives, two Silencers, two Shotguns with red-dot sights, Shotgun with an Extra Grip, Hack Shotgun, four Steadholder Lever Guns, twelve monomolecular spike-tipped Boarding Pikes, Autogun with red-dot sight, Vanaheim-pattern Skitarii Combat Shotgun (mono-edge bayonet), ammunition including manstopper and dum-dum bullets and Inferno shotgun shells: a whole miscellany of armaments kept in a weapons locker aboard the Lightning Fury.
- Brass Knuckles in his back pocket, forged with admantine (counts as mono).
- Monoknife at his belt.
- Sulymann Holdout "Salvation" Auto in his boot.
- .54 Tranter Hand Cannon in a holster hidden underneath the pilot's console.
- Lho-sticks.
- A hidden stash of Tranq for those really bad days or really good days.
- Data-slate, that he's always losing. Keeps mission data and other notes on it.
- Chrono, for time, the telling of.
- A collection of 15 lurid and lewd pendthrift dreadfuls, many depicting heroic Imperial warriors pulping filthy xenos, in space. He'd get a subscription, but he's never in the same place for long enough. Titles include:
- Stormtrooper Sarinne's Bazookas versus the dark Eldar
