History
Simon D'Railier is the second son of Draphus and Selina D'Railier, of House D'Ralier. Selina herself is a scion of an important line in the D'Ralier Charter Family, and Draphus the dashing Naval Officer she seduced away from the fleet to captain one of the dynasty's cruisers. Simon's elder brother is Kavanagh D'Ralier.
Simon was raised expecting that his father's captaincy would one day pass to Kavanagh, and the best Simon could expect was an officer's rank within his sibling's command.
It was widely expected to be so: the two brothers were best friends, always getting into scrapes and adventures, Kavanagh taking the lead, ever sure Simon would back him up.
However, fate had other plans. By family law dating back millennia, the scions of the house were each to serve in the Guard for five years between the ages of 21 and 26, splitting the pair for a few years.
While Simon was serving as a Colonel (fighting the Scarlet Danse cult on Draxx V), a bloody feud erupted between house D'Ralier and another house,
Kassandora. By the time the feud was 'settled', Simon's father had been slain, and the charter passed to Kavanagh.
When Simon's term of military service ended, things were colder between the two brothers. Kavanagh was distracted with new-found responsibilities, and Simon publicly blamed his brother for the death of their father. In truth, Simon blamed himself.
Twenty years have passed since then. Simon has fallen into drink and hedonism, hoping to forget the past. He spends much time in the company of Jak Xanatov, an independently wealthy lighter pilot who knows how to party, how to start a good fight, and how to end a bad one.
Kavanagh has heard of Simon's fall from grace, and has sent a message to his brother, hoping to turn him around and get back his "best friend, best second, and only man he'd trust with his life".
